Art has always been Latoya’s passion. It is her desire to use this God-given gift to highlight the beauty that surrounds us
in nature and to be awed by it. Conservation of the environment is therefore an element portrayed in most of her pieces.
She believes in the use of realistic art as an emotional experience which connects man with his creator.
In this way, man’s love for self, mankind and the environment can be generated.
Her family has always been supportive. Latoya’s mother introduced her to watercolour, gouache and oils since she was 14.
She, being a professional artist herself, would inspire her to explore different techniques. Her brother also encouraged this passion by critiquing her work and encouraging her to participate in any art-related competition and exhibition. His comic book collection, which featured illustrations of X-Men characters, Batman and Hulk, from an early age , helped develop her fascination of the human figure. This therefore, led Latoya to develop a love for portraits.
Her father would take her to exhibitions, art galleries and drives in the Western part of Trinidad to some of the most
scenic locations, where she was captivated by nature, especially the ocean. Her fascination with landscapes and seascapes
flourished and having the desire to capture it in paintings became her primary focus.
Latoya credits her elementary and High school teachers for being instrumental with her love for art as well.
It was here, that she was exposed to art competitions, and further encouraged to explore the world of art.
She extends much gratitude to her friends who have always been supportive and have watched her progress
over the years as an artist.
Currently, Latoya works on commission for Portraits and Paintings for clients. She is working on her first solo Art Exhibition to be held at the Art Society in July 2017.
